After much review and discussion with survivors of domestic abuse Women’s Aid – the national domestic abuse charity – and SafeLives are piloting a new dynamic approach towards tackling domestic abuse. The scheme is call ‘Change that lasts’ and is being piloted in 3 counties including Nottinghamshire. Equation is excited to be involved in the pilot over the coming months.

‘Change that lasts’ has come into existence after Women’s Aid reviewed the current approaches to dealing with domestic abuse. It is a needs-led approach based on an initiative to help women who are experiencing domestic abuse to be supported earlier, and to help set them on the path to long-term recovery and independence.

‘Change that lasts’ is described as:

“…a cross sector common approach that places the survivor at the heart and builds responses around her needs and the strengths and resources available to her.” – Women’s Aid

The scheme consists of three core elements:

Ask Me – this element is a community-based approach with the aim of creating a safe environment to enable survivors to discuss abuse early and minimise long lasting effects. ‘Ask me’ calls on people who work with local communities to become an ambassador to help identify victims of domestic abuse, and flag them with local services as being in need of support.

Trusted Professional – this aspect is based around professional services and support. It will allow targeted training to reach those likely to come into contact with a domestic abuse victim and enable them to identify individuals at risk.

Specialist Support Services – this is a domestic abuse service that will work with local authorities and such to adopt an approach consistent with the ‘Change that lasts’ initiative.

‘Change that lasts’ launches later this year; to find out more click here.

It is important that everyone experiencing abuse feels supported and able to seek help whenever and as soon as they need it. If you are experiencing domestic abuse and need help, please see our help page.
